    Very slow access

    by Neil » Tue Dec 05, 2006 4:36 pm

Capital is running very very slowly on some things, especially looking up stock numbers on a large database, and switching between companies. we have not all that long ago switched to windows 2000 on our server, and install Norton Internet Security. Could that be slowing things down, if so what file name extensions could we safely remove from the scanning list?

you must turn off the Index feature on the Hard Drive. Suggested fixes are to Download and apply all patches to XP and Windows 2000, (Critical and Non Critical) also download the Realtek Driver Updates from Microsoft Site.

Also in your Network Settings make sure that all Network Cards have the Same DNS Settings ( if using Internet Sharing or using a router / switch., and Force the card settings to 100 MB Full Duplex, not Auto
There are probably a few Others as well.

One other thing is if you have Internet Sharing Software installed , remove it and buy a Router/Switch that will support Dial Up as well as Broardband. Cost from about $200.00 retail.

It is possible that anti-virus software could be slowing your system down, because it may be scanning your database files as they are accessed by your software, and that could be very slow.

Most anti-virus scanning programs let you exclude files from the scanning sequence. If you can exclude .DBF, .CDX and .DBT files from scanning, you may get your performance back. It sounds like your system is very slow opening files, although you haven't given us much information to go on as yet.

You should also run the Database Maintenance function found in Installation Workshop under Toolbox, if you have not done so recently.
